Gli Spike TV Video Game Awards sono stati presentati annualmente fin dal 2004. Sono simili agli Oscar, solo che sono per videogiochi. Inizialmente i premi sono stati determinati dal voto popolare, ma dal 2007 il vincitore è scelto esclusivamente dalla votazione di professionisti del settore di tutto il mondo tra cui giornalisti e sviluppatori.
Sono state diffuse le nomination per i prossimi VGA che si terranno il prossimo 11 dicembre. Dall'elenco completo che troverete in fondo all'articolo, spunta la costante presenza di Mass Effect 2, il capolavoro Bioware che conquista ben 10 candidature, seguito da Red Dead Redemption con 9 e l'accoppiata di FPS Call of Duty: Black Ops e Halo: Reach entrambi con 7. Questi titoli citati se la dovranno vedere con God of War III per contendersi l'ambito premio di Game of the Year. Call of Duty: Black Ops è riuscito ad entrare in più nomination, come miglior gioco multiplayer e gioco dell’anno.
L'evento sarà da seguire non solo per la proclamazione dei vincitori ma anche perchè è da sempre un ottimo palcoscenico per annunci importanti. Quest'anno verranno presentati l'ultimo gioco horror THQ in collaborazione con il noto Guillermo del Toro, Batman: Arkham City, il nuovo misterioso progetto BioWare (Mass Effect 3?) e ci sarà il possibile annuncio della software house Valve relativo all'atteso Left 4 Dead 3, o perchè no, il tanto rumoreggiato approdo della suddetta saga su console PlayStation 3 dopo che giorni fa Sony ha promesso un'esclusiva per la propria console di punta durante l'evento, sempre che non si tratti di Uncharted 3.
